Fujifilm in Tilburg Takes Major Step Toward CO₂-Neutral Manufacturing

FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe in Tilburg has taken a significant leap forward in its journey toward CO₂-neutral production with the commissioning of a new electric steam boiler (E-boiler). This €2 million investment is a key milestone in the site’s ambition to become fully CO₂-neutral by 2030, twenty years ahead of the European Union’s deadline. The commissioning of the E-boiler was therefore celebrated in style.

The E-boiler replaces one of two natural gas boilers and produces steam using 100% renewable electricity. With this development, the Life Science Manufacturing (LSM) operations at the site are now CO₂-neutral.

The energy transition journey began back in 2011, when five on-site wind turbines were connected to a private electricity grid. Since 2016, 100% of the electricity has come from sustainable sources, guaranteed through European certificates of origin. Since 2011, Fujifilm Tilburg has been steadily reducing its carbon footprint. After connecting to local wind energy, the site has continued to prioritize energy efficiency, electrification, and the reduction of energy consumption. The installation of heat pumps for the production of Cell Culture Media is another example of these ongoing efforts.

While the site still relies on a natural gas boiler during high-demand periods, the E-boiler is expected to run at least 25% of the time, cutting emissions by 2,300 tons annually – and the aim is to scale up in the coming years.  In its first year of operation, the E-boiler has already saved over 270 tons of CO2 during commissioning.

For customers of Fujifilm’s original photographic paper, this move underscores the company’s commitment to Green Value manufacturing.
Many of Fujifilm’s partners – especially in pharmaceutical and imaging industries, are demanding more sustainable production processes. By leading the way to CO₂-neutral operations, the Tilburg site strengthens its position as a trusted supplier aligned with customers’ sustainability goals.
